“How Can Truancy Affect Custody?”

“How Can Truancy Affect Custody?”

All minors are late to school on occasion or miss days. However, this can be a real problem if the minor is missing multiple days, has many tardies, and it begins to affect school performance. In addition, when it reaches the point of getting truancy notices, you have a real problem on your hands.

Generally, if there is a serious school attendance problem, the court will give the parent who has custody a chance to fix the problem. This many not be true, however, if the probably has been long-standing or if the student is failing in school.

If you are the non-custodial parent during the week, you should keep track of your child’s grades and attendance to make sure you are aware of everything that is going on. If there are meetings about grades or attendance with teachers or school administrators, you need to make sure to be there for the meetings.

If you are the custodial parent, you need to make sure that if there are any absences that are justified you are getting proper documentation and getting it to the school. Failing to do so could make the attendance look bad when you have legitimate reasons for missed school, such as illnesses the minor has had.

Whichever side of the issue you are on, you can be pretty sure that if a truancy notice is issued, you will end up in court talking to the family law judge about it.
